Visas
Foreigner who wants to enter India must have a
valid visa affixed on his or her passport, except
for nationals of Bhutan and Nepal, who may carry
only suitable means of identification. Tourist
visas are issued for one month, six months or five
years, granted for the purpose of a visit. Details
and types of visa can be obtained from Indian
Embassy or Consulate in their respective
Countries. Foreigners traveling in a group (at
least 4 persons) can apply for collective visa
under a recognized travel agent.
Foreign Tourists who wish to stay in India beyond
the visa period should apply for extension of 3
months; before his residential permit is due to
expire. Extensions are routinely issued at the
Foreigners' Registration Offices in all
metropolitan cities and in all state and district
capitals at the office of the Superintendent of
police.
Foreigners coming to India on tourist visas for 6
months or a shorter period are not required to
register themselves with any authority in India.
They can move around freely in the country, except
to restricted and protected areas.
Protected Areas
Special permits may be required additionally to
visit certain areas of the country. Parts of
Sikkim and the north-east frontier states are out
of bounds for foreign nationals. Permits are
normally provided to tourists for a limited period
and may obtained from Indian Missions abroad or
Govt. Agencies within India.
Permit for travel to Andaman & Nikobar Islands
and Lakshadweep Islands can be obtained from
mainland nearest to the destination.
